Poodle (Standard)

Caniche, Barbone, Chien Canne, Grosse Pudel, French Poodle

The Standard Poodle is the original working Poodle and, in temperament, one of the most rounded large breeds going. People expect a precious show dog and instead get an athletic, water-loving retriever with a dry sense of humour and an almost unnerving ability to read a household. They are affectionate without being needy, calm indoors once exercised, and easily among the smartest dogs of any breed. That intelligence comes with a need for real exercise and mental work; a long walk plus a swim, a run or a training session suits them. They make excellent family dogs and are forgiving enough for a committed first-time owner, but they are wasted on anyone who wants a dog to ignore in the yard. The curly coat sheds very little, which helps allergy sufferers, but it is high-maintenance and needs brushing several times a week plus professional clipping every six to eight weeks.

Origin & history

The Poodle was bred as a water retriever in continental Europe, most often credited to Germany with France responsible for refining the breed and giving it its modern profile. The fancy clip began as a working compromise: hair was left over the chest and joints to keep vital areas warm in cold water while the hindquarters were shaved for easier swimming. The Standard is the foundation type, the actual gundog from which the Miniature and Toy were later bred down. Its brains and flashy looks made it a star of European circuses, and the same trainability now makes it a top performer in obedience, agility and even assistance work. Standard Poodles have a long history in Australia as both a serious show breed and a family dog, and they sit behind many of the larger doodle crosses popular here today.

Temperament

Standard Poodles combine a gundog's biddability with a sharp, almost human attentiveness. They bond closely with the whole family rather than fixating on one person, and they are typically gentle and patient with children, which makes them one of the better large breeds for a busy household. Most are friendly but slightly reserved with strangers, settling quickly once they take their cue from you, and they will bark to announce a visitor without being a guarding breed. They generally live happily alongside other dogs and cats. Trainability is the headline trait; they learn quickly, remember everything and clearly enjoy the work, so reward-based training pays off fast. The catch is that a clever, athletic dog left bored and under-exercised will get into mischief, become anxious or develop nuisance habits, so daily physical and mental outlets are not optional.

Appearance

A tall, elegant, squarely built dog standing over 38 cm at the shoulder, with most adults in the 45 to 60 cm range and weighing around 20 to 32 kg. The frame is athletic and well-muscled, moving with a light, springy stride. The coat is a single dense layer of harsh curls (or cords) that grows continuously instead of shedding. Accepted colours are solid, including black, white, apricot, cream, silver, blue, brown and red. The head is long and refined with a straight muzzle, dark oval eyes and long ears lying flat to the head. Pet owners usually keep them in a practical short trim rather than the sculpted show clip.

Suitability

This is a house-and-yard dog at heart, needing space to stretch out and somewhere safe to run, ideally with access to water for a swim. They suit active families and energetic owners, and a dedicated first-time owner can manage one because the dog is so willing, but only if the exercise and grooming commitment is realistic. Standards are people-oriented and dislike being left alone for long days; they do best where someone is around for much of the time. The coat is not heavy, so they tolerate Australian heat reasonably well, but they still need shade, fresh water and exercise scheduled for the cooler hours in summer. Be honest about the grooming bill, because the coat needs regular professional attention for life.

Health

Standard Poodles typically live around 12 to 14 years. As a larger breed they carry a different health profile from their smaller cousins. Hip dysplasia is a real concern and parents should be hip scored before breeding. Both bloat (gastric dilatation-volvulus), a sudden life-threatening twisting of the stomach, and Addison's disease, a hormonal disorder the breed is notably prone to, occur often enough to take seriously. Eye conditions including progressive retinal atrophy occur, as does sebaceous adenitis, an immune skin disease that causes hair loss and scaling and runs in some lines. Responsible breeders hip score, do annual eye testing, and DNA test for PRA and the relevant Addison's and degenerative risks where available. Ask to see those results, and ask whether sebaceous adenitis has appeared in the line, before you commit to a puppy.
